At the very least, the proprietary file format of word processor A needs to be converted into the proprietary format of word processor B. Each word processor vendor uses different formatting commands, such that a document file from one vendor’s word processor cannot be used directly in another vendor’s word processor. ![]() Word processor files, however, contain additional, invisible formatting commands that the software uses to produce fonts, text styles such as boldface and italics, bulleted lists, placeholders for endnotes, footnotes, and bibliographic citations, and so on. Caleb McDaniel has written in Why (and How) I Wrote My Academic Book in Plain Text, it “seems like the ancient past of personal computing is becoming the wave of the future.”Ī plain text file differs from a word processor file because plain text contains only the letters, numbers, and symbols that appear on a standard keyboard, known as the ASCII character set. All computer programming source code is written in plain text. HTML, the foundation of the Internet and World Wide Web, is a plain-text markup language. Plain text files have been around since the birth of modern computing. ![]() What is new is that writers are increasingly turning (or re-turning) to plain text because they are sick of having to deal with complicated, bloated, expensive word processing software, proprietary file formats that constantly change, incompatibilities across word processor versions and computer platforms (including, now, smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices), collaborators and co-authors who each use a different word processor, et sic porro. Writing in plain text is not new, and dates back at least to 1978 when the TeX computer typesetting system was created by Donald Knuth. Then one “hands over” one’s text to a typesetting program, which in a very short time returns beautifully typeset copy.Īlthough Cottrell was talking about printed copy here, he goes on to say that his remarks apply to digital documents as well. This is accomplished using a text editor, a piece of software not to be confused with a word processor. First one types one’s text and gets its logical structure right, indicating this structure in the text via simple annotations. I am suggesting, therefore, that should be two distinct “moments” in the production of a printed text using a computer. This concept was described in 1999 by Allin Cottrell: With the plain text workflow, you work in plain text, and all of those other document formats are outputs from your plain text source document. However, your original words are captured in one or more plain text files, which remain the source from which various other document formats flow. You might also bring this translated file into your word processor to continue tweaking the formatting. ![]() Then, using freely-available software such as pandoc, you translate your plain text document into whatever file format you need to provide (to a colleague, reviewer, literary agent, journal editor, blog post, email, website, etc.), be it Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, PDF, HTML, or whatever. You initially capture your words using a plain text editor, perhaps using a lightweight formatting language like Markdown. The idea of the plain text workflow is that you separate the act of writing from that of producing a formatted, typeset final document. Mind you, I said writing, not typesetting or formatting, which is a major part of what word processors do. ![]() The Plain Text Workflow is an alternative to writing with a word processor. ![]() 5/18/2023 0 Comments Als emg findings![]() ![]() Limb-onset ALS begins with weakness in the arms and legs and accounts for about two-thirds of all classic ALS cases. Ĭlassic ALS accounts for about 70% of all cases of ALS and can be subdivided into limb-onset ALS (also known as spinal-onset) and bulbar-onset ALS. There is debate over whether PLS and PMA are separate diseases or simply variants of ALS. Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) involves only upper motor neurons, and progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) involves only lower motor neurons. Typical or "classical" ALS involves upper motor neurons in the brain and lower motor neurons in the spinal cord. ĪLS can be classified by the types of motor neurons that are affected. Typical or "classical" ALS involves neurons in the brain ( upper motor neurons) and in the spinal cord ( lower motor neurons). A few people with ALS have symptoms that are limited to one spinal cord region for at least 12 to 24 months before spreading to a second region these regional variants of ALS are associated with a better prognosis. In most cases the disease spreads and affects other spinal cord regions. In about 5% of cases, muscles in the trunk of the body are affected first. In about 25% of cases, muscles in the face, mouth, and throat are affected first because motor neurons in the part of the brainstem called the medulla oblongata (formerly called the "bulb") start to die first along with lower motor neurons. ĪLS itself can be classified in a few different ways: by how fast the disease progresses by whether it is familial or sporadic, and by the region first affected. ![]() Other motor neuron diseases include primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), progressive bulbar palsy, pseudobulbar palsy, and monomelic amyotrophy (MMA). ĪLS is a motor neuron disease, which is a group of neurological disorders that selectively affect motor neurons, the cells that control voluntary muscles of the body. In 1869, the connection between the symptoms and the underlying neurological problems was first described by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, who in 1874 began using the term amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ĭescriptions of the disease date back to at least 1824 by Charles Bell. The average survival from onset to death is two to four years, though this can vary, and about 10% survive longer than ten years. The disease can affect people of any age, but usually starts around the age of 60. Mechanical ventilation can prolong survival but does not stop disease progression, with death usually caused by respiratory failure. Non-invasive ventilation may result in both improved quality and length of life. A medication called riluzole may extend life by about two to three months. The goal of treatment is to improve symptoms. The diagnosis is based on a person's signs and symptoms, with testing done to rule out other potential causes. About half of these genetic cases are due to one of two specific genes. The remaining 5% to 10% of cases have a genetic cause linked to a history of the disease in the family, and these are known as familial ALS. However, both genetic and environmental factors are believed to be involved. Most cases of ALS (about 90% to 95%) have no known cause, and are known as sporadic ALS. Motor neuron loss continues until the ability to eat, speak, move, and finally the ability to breathe is lost with the cause of early death usually being respiratory failure. Around half of people with ALS develop at least mild difficulties with thinking and behavior, and about 15% develop frontotemporal dementia. Limb-onset ALS begins with weakness in the arms or legs, while bulbar-onset ALS begins with difficulty speaking or swallowing. Early symptoms of ALS include stiff muscles, muscle twitches, and gradual increasing weakness and muscle wasting. ALS is the most common form of the motor neuron diseases. Suspected as based on symptoms and supported by MRI Īmyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS), also known as motor neuron disease ( MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that results in the progressive loss of motor neurons that control voluntary muscles. It reduces the degree of multiprogramming. It removes the processes from the memory. Medium-term scheduling is a part of swapping. Short-term schedulers are faster than long-term schedulers. Short-term schedulers, also known as dispatchers, make the decision of which process to execute next. CPU scheduler selects a process among the processes that are ready to execute and allocates CPU to one of them. It is the change of ready state to running state of the process. Its main objective is to increase system performance in accordance with the chosen set of criteria. When a process changes the state from new to ready, then there is use of long-term scheduler. Time-sharing operating systems have no long term scheduler. On some systems, the long-term scheduler may not be available or minimal. If the degree of multiprogramming is stable, then the average rate of process creation must be equal to the average departure rate of processes leaving the system. It also controls the degree of multiprogramming. The primary objective of the job scheduler is to provide a balanced mix of jobs, such as I/O bound and processor bound. Process loads into the memory for CPU scheduling. It selects processes from the queue and loads them into memory for execution. A long-term scheduler determines which programs are admitted to the system for processing. Their main task is to select the jobs to be submitted into the system and to decide which process to run. Schedulers are special system software which handle process scheduling in various ways. In either case, the dispatcher then selects a process from the queue to execute. If the process has completed or aborted, the process is discarded. When a process is interrupted, that process is transferred in the waiting queue. Queue is implemented by using linked list. Each entry in the queue is a pointer to a particular process. Processes that are not running are kept in queue, waiting for their turn to execute. When a new process is created, it enters into the system as in the running state. Two-state process model refers to running and non-running states which are described below − S.N. The OS scheduler determines how to move processes between the ready and run queues which can only have one entry per processor core on the system in the above diagram, it has been merged with the CPU. The OS can use different policies to manage each queue (FIFO, Round Robin, Priority, etc.). A new process is always put in this queue.ĭevice queues − The processes which are blocked due to unavailability of an I/O device constitute this queue. Ready queue − This queue keeps a set of all processes residing in main memory, ready and waiting to execute. Job queue − This queue keeps all the processes in the system. The Operating System maintains the following important process scheduling queues − When the state of a process is changed, its PCB is unlinked from its current queue and moved to its new state queue. The OS maintains a separate queue for each of the process states and PCBs of all processes in the same execution state are placed in the same queue.
